This was has an interesting history. The 1960’s was an era when several manufactures joined the race of producing the first automatic chronograph: Zenith/Movado, Seiko, and “Project 99” a consortium of four brands.
This consortium was made up of Heuer, Dubois Dépraz, Breitling and Hamilton-Büren. Together, they would file a patent for the Chronomatic in 1967. Heuer named his movement the calibre 11 and Breitling the chronomat, while Hamilton chose to use Chrono-matic in two words.
