How to change Watch Straps

The steel bracelet (Ep.3)

In the segment today, we’ll be showing you how to change bracelets.

What you need:

– a pair of spring bar installing and removing pliers (or a spring bar tool with small fork end, see below)
– a watch bracelet
– and a clean non-slip surface. Essentiel.

Note that pliers for changing bracelets is relatively expensive, and you don’t want to scrimp here. A cheaper tool will more than likely non function correctly. We speak from experience of course.

A great alternative to the pliers is a spring bar tool with a smaller and finer fork end (than the one used for changing classic straps).

First thing you’ll need to do is remove the original bracelet. Those with classic straps on, click here.

Now we can put on the new bracelet.

Installing a watch bracelet

Very important : Make sure you know which end of the bracelet goes on which side of the watch. The top part of the bracelet should be inserted at the bottom of the watch. If you don’t know which side of the bracelet is up, don’t fret. Look for the opening of the clasp. It should be on top when you hang the bracelet in front of you. The folded part will be at the bottom.

Step 1..Insert the spring bar through the hole at the top part of the bracelet.

Step 2. Place this at the bottom of the watch so that it’s sitting more or less snug on top.

Step 3. Gently press down and hold this top part in place with one hand. With the other hand depress one side of the spring bar with your spring bar tool. Fork side of course.

Step 4. Now slowly nudge the bracelet down until you hear a tiny “click.” The spring bar is now locked in place.

Step 5. Repeat with the other side of the bracelet.

You’re all set.

Slide that gorgeous baby on with a suit or a nice button down and you’re good to go!

Note : If you need to remove the bracelet, it’s very straightforward. The technique is all in the wrist. Where the bracelet joins the watch case, there are 2 recesses. Gently insert the fine fork end of your spring bar tool into one of them and find the ridge of the spring bar. Depress it while gently pulling the bracelet out. Repeat the same on the other side, and you’re done. On some watches, you may need to depress both sides of the spring bar in order to remove it.

Maybe a bit trickier than changing classic straps, but with a little bit of practice you’ll be able to do this manoeuvre scratch-free like an expert!
